Eid ul Fitr

Khutba 20.09.09

Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!
La ilaha illa Allahu
Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!
Wa Lillahil Hamd.

O Allah, We thank You endlessly for all Your gifts and favors to us.

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is the servant and Messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him and his family and companions.

Allahu Akbar kabiira!

wa alhamdu lillahi kathiira!

wa subhan Allah bokratan wa asiila!

We feel happy and we give thanks to Allah that we obeyed His commands; and that we fasted during the month of Ramadan. Today is the day of Eid al Fitr, and Eid is the day of thanks. It marks the end of the month of fasting.

Today is a blessed day. People are dressed in their best of clothes, look their best, and behave their best. We have to ask ourselves honestly whether we have adorned our souls as we have adorned our appearance. After being good students at the school of Ramadan, I believe we must have attained transparency to our souls.

Let us carry over the teachings of the blessed month today and for the rest of our lives. Let us purify our bodies and souls. Let us be humble, kind and charitable. Let us give generously to the sick, the needy and the orphans. Let us rise above envy, materialism and selfishness. Let us strengthen our bond with our Creator and with each other. Let us be more united. Let us all become more and more committed to righteousness in our own lives, in the lives of our families, and in the society in which we live. Let us have no place in our hearts for disloyalty, dishonesty or envy towards anyone. Let us discard these bad manners that damage our families and our societies.

Anas Ibn Mâlik (radhy Allâhu ‘anhu) reported that he and other companions were sitting with the Messenger (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam), who said, "A man from the people of Paradise will enter now." Then, a man from the Ansâr entered, his beard dripping with water from ablution. 'Abdullah Ibn 'Amr Ibn al-'Aas (radhy Allâhu ‘anhu), who was there, followed the man and tricked him to stay with him for three days to learn the secret.

Abdullah said, "I didn't hear anything but good from him. When the three nights had passed, I said, 'O servant of Allah! I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say that you are a man from the people of Paradise. So, I wanted to stay with you to see what you do so that I could follow you, but I have not seen you praying or fasting much. So what is that you do for Allah's Messenger (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to say what he has said?' The man replied, "Nothing more other than what you have seen, except that I have no place in myself for disloyalty to any of the Muslims, nor do I have any envy towards any Muslim in what Allah has given them." 'Abdullah said, "This is what has made you deserving of the praise and this is what we cannot do."

O believers in Allah!

I invite you to the secret of happiness in life! There are various reasons why human life is a continued scuffle. Every one strives to live up to it. One may destroy oneself because of the pressures of life or the bitterness of failure.
Each one of us may fall for unnecessary grief, depression and anxiety, but this secret extinguishes the bitterness and illuminates the darkness. It is optimism.

Optimism breeds hope, and hope breeds work, and work breeds success. Let optimism brighten up our lives and bring glimmers of hope for us to enjoy our work and achieve success! Be optimistic to feel satisfaction and self-confidence, to control negative feelings and thoughts, to shine your soul and illuminate the path of your life no matter how complicated it gets.

Optimism is the fuel for the Spirit, which provides it with positive energy. It makes one see opportunities, rather than miss them, and look at what one owns, rather than what one lost. Optimism breeds a happier, healthier and better person who is able to find solutions to problems and address challenges.

A successful head of a family is one who wants to empower the community with stability, security, kindness and love. This is the means to overcome obstacles and family problems:

* Do not let work worries seep into the family to add to its internal concerns.
* If you want all your family members to have love and genuine respect for you, do not impose your views on your wife and children.

* Do not raise your voice or shout when there is a problem.
* Do not utter swear words or insults, which may disturb the family atmosphere.
* Abandon frowning and gloominess and smile a lot!

O brothers and sisters!

Extend the beauty of Eid to your families and communities. Let us improve our morals and how we treat others. The Prophet (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “A person reaches by his good morals the rank of a devout fasting person”. He also said (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam): “The best of you (Muslims) are those with the best morals” (Narrated by Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim).

Try to help others in their misfortunes. If you cannot physically help them, do not underestimate the power of a kind word or a prayer that may have a soothing effect on those in distress. As the Prophet (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “A good word is charity”. He also said (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam): “The one who looks after and works for a widow and for a poor person is like a warrior fighting for Allah’s (swt) or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all night”.

It is a virtue to smile to others, to be spontaneous and to seek excuses for others. Do not look for the negative aspects of others, and blame yourself before blaming others. Give generously even to those who do not give to you, forgive those who have wronged you, and visit those who do not visit you. Keep your harm away from others and extend your compassion and kindness day after day.
