Nehal Afana, a 25 year old Palestinian lady from Gaza City, have now been living in Tromsø for 6 months while being part of The Gaza – Tromsø project, which is sponsored by Tromsø Council, and based upon the friendship ties between Gaza and Tromsø. Part of the project is for Nehal to learn how Tvibit Filmhouse is operating  and establish a simular filmhouse in Gaza City. For the last 6 monts she has been working full time at Tvibit Filmhouse to learn how everything about it is operating.

It all started 2 years ago when Anniken Hoel – Norwegian film maker – presented a documentary film about Nehal called ”Mohadjaba” under the film festival NUFF, following the young woman Nehal on her journey towards realizing her dream to become a film maker. No women in Gaza are working professionally behind camera in the Media, but Nehal is focused on her goal. In the movie Nehal says “the camera is my weapon”, and upon this the idea to invite Nehal to Tromsø and teach her about professional filmmaking starts, as part of a broader project over 3 years aiming to establish a filmhouse in Gaza City, a mini-Tvibit, where youth can learn about filmmaking and start producing their own movies.

The consept has potencial to mean tremendously much for the youth in Gaza – where everday life is filled with suppression, assault, murder and harassment from Israeli soldiers.

Next week Nehal is moving back to Gaza City where she will cooperate with The Young Journalists Club in Gaza to realize the filmhous project. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has sponsored the project with 3 million kroner to buy neccesary film equipment for the new filmhouse, and over the next 3 years, two teachers from Tromsø will  travel to Gaza twice a year and run movie workshops for the youth interested.

Nehal is scheduled to come back to Tromsø next year to present her own film production “Freedom”. The idea of the film is built on the friendship between Gaza and Tromsø, portraying two young ladies, one from Gaza and the other from Tromsø.

We wish Nehal great success with the filmhouse project for youth in Gaza, and if anybody is interested in supporting the project they may contact Nehal through her e-mail  heart.feeling@gmail.com
