The Lack of blessings

Dear Muslims,

Our parents and grand parents keep telling us that the blessing has removed from time and money. They tell us how they used to live with very little amount of money but yet was more than satisfying; and how they used to do many activities in the day while now time is passing very fast. One can ask is this expression true or right? What do they mean when they talk about blessings in that context?

Blessings in that context, (Barakah in Arabic), is spiritual gifts or protection transmitted from Allah. It is also described as "the greater good" derived from any act.

Indeed Muslims are encouraged to seek blessings in their children, money, health …etc. But how do we do that?

To seek the blessings, we have to follow some guidelines:

  1. Fear of Allah. If the people of the towns had but believed and feared God, We should indeed have opened out to them (All kinds of) blessings from heaven and earth; but they rejected (the truth), and We brought them to book for their misdeeds. [7:96]

And for those who fear God, He (ever) prepares a way out, and He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine…. [65:2]

  1. Reciting Quran. (Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto thee, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition. [38:29]

  2. Praying to Allah to give us His blessings.

  3. By not being mean and greedy. «Hakim bin Hizam said: (Once) I asked Allah's Apostle (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said: ‘O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand.’»

  4. By being honest with people. Hakim bin Hizam reported that Allah's Apostle said: «The seller and the buyer have the right to keep or return goods as long as they have not parted or till they part; and if both the parties spoke the truth and described the defects and qualities (of the goods), then they would be blessed in their transaction, and if they told lies or hid something, then the blessings of their transaction would be lost.»

  5. Starting the day as early as possible.

  6. Follow the prophet (sunnah) in every aspect of life.

  7. Relying on Allah. …And if any one puts his trust in God, sufficient is (God) for him. For God will surely accomplish his purpose: verily, for all things has God appointed a due proportion. [65:3]

  8. Performing Istikharah for every matter.

  9. Don’t ask people but Allah.

  10. Sadaqah. …and nothing do ye spend in the least (in His cause) but He replaces it: for He is the Best of those who grant Sustenance. [34:39]

  11. Earn your money from clean source. God will deprive usury of all blessing, but will give increase for deeds of charity: For He loveth not creatures ungrateful and wicked. [2: 276]

  12. Thanking Allah for everything He give and gave to you. God (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve Him) with gratitude. [3:144]

And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed. [14:7]

  1. Doin the obligatory prayers. Enjoin prayer on thy people, and be constant therein. We ask thee not to provide sustenance: We provide it for thee. But the (fruit of) the Hereafter is for righteousness. [20:132]

  2. Continuous ask for forgiveness. Further I have spoken to them in public and secretly in private, Saying, «Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance; Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water)… [71:9-12]

We ask Allah to bless us, forgive us and reward us Paradise.

Amen
